BABBACOMBE
Staying at the Anchorage Hotel, Babbacombe
Monday 2nd -
5 Days
Day 1
This morning our coach takes us through the west country. We make refreshments stops en route and arrive at Babbacombe and the Anchorage Hotel in the afternoon and enjoy a warm welcome from this popular hotel. Dinner will be followed by evening entertainment this completes the first day of our Devon break.
Day 2
Our excursion today is to the Maritime town of Brixham which is still an active fishing port returning good catches daily. The statue on the Quay is in memory of William of Orange landing at this point on November 5th 1688 and on the opposite side is a replica of Drake’s famous Golden Hind. We can enjoy a stroll around the Marina and Break Water Beach, take lunch at one of the many cafes and restaurants or simply watch the fascinating, constant movement of vessels in this busy port.
Day 3
Today we have two very different venues to visit. Our first visit is to the quiet and peaceful Buckfast Abbey. Buckfast Abbey was founded nearly a thousand years ago and stood for 500 years before it was closed by Henry VIII. Rebuilding began in 1882 and was finally finished in 1938 by a community of Benedictine monks. Buckfast Abbey is famous for its stained glass, honey and its famous tonic wine. The gift shop has an extraordinary collection of gifts made by monks and nuns from all across Europe. Following our Buckfast Abbey visit we move on to the Butterfly Farm and Otter sanctuary. Here we can wander through the steamy butterfly house amongst tropical foliage and free flying butterflies and moths and watch the grace of the short clawed otters. We return in time for dinner and pleasant evening entertainment.
Day 4
Today we board the coach and head for Dartmouth. We spend the morning at leisure in this beautiful town exploring, maybe visit the castle or take a short trip on the River Dart to watch the Herons and Kingfishers. Following our visit to Dartmouth we travel to the spectacular pebble beach at Slapton Sands to enjoy the beach and the nature reserve of Slapton Ley before returning to Babbacombe.
Day 5
We take our leave of the Anchorage this morning and make our way homeward. We will make a stop for a pleasant, leisurely lunch before completing our journey in the afternoon.
