Staying aboard the MS Classica

Tuesday 25th September - Friday 5th October 2012

11 Days

 

Day 1

Following an early start we travel to Dover where we board the ferry for the short sea crossing to Calais. From Calais our coach takes us to the Holiday Inn, Gent for our overnight stay.

 

Day 2

This morning we leave Gent and continue our journey through Belgium, passing the Capital city of Brussels and on towards the German border at Aachen. We continue towards Cologne and onto Bonn on the banks of the River Rhine where we make a lunch stop. During- the afternoon we continue towards Frankfurt and onto Wurzburg for our overnight stop, Our overnight stop is at the four star Novotel Wurzburg. The hotel is in the centre close to the pretty streets around the old town area. Guest rooms are well appointed and the hotel has leisure facilities.

 

Day 3

A leisurely start today . After some time in Wurzburg we continue, passing Nurnberg and Regensburg and on to Passau. This afternoon we board the MS Classica for our seven night cruise on the beautiful Danube river. The ship offers a very high standard of hospitality with it’s elegant restaurant, spacious panoramic lounge and bar plus sun deck with whirlpool, the cabins are stylish and well fitted out with all modern amenities. We have time to settle into our cabins and explore the ship before joining the cruise director for a welcome

cocktail followed by a welcome dinner and the evenings activities.

 

Day 4

This morning we can stroll on deck as we cruise through the famous vineyards of the Wachau Valley towards Vienna. The journey is made even more fascinating as we have to pass through eleven locks before we reach Vienna. We arrive in Vienna, the city of music and joie de vivre, around midday. Our excursion today is a guided coach tour of this amazing city. Vienna is not only famous for it’s music but also it’s chocolate cake , new wine , St Stephan’s cathedral, the Hofburg Palace etc: etc;and every where examples of superb architecture , another photo opportunity. We rejoin the MS Classica this evening in time for dinner whilst setting sail for Budapest.

 

Day 5

After passing through the region of the Danube bend, dubbed the Hungarian Wachau, we experience the unforgettable approach to Budapest. After docking a local coach today takes us to the Buda side of Budapest. We visit one of the beautiful churches, tour the city and visit the viewpoint high above the city where we have magnificent views of Budapest and the Danube far below. We return to the ship for an early dinner as there is an optional tour to see “Budapest by Night” which includes a local venue to try Hungarian Goulash and to hear some traditional music.

 

Day 6

We cruise from Budapest to Ordas arriving in the early morning. The ship docks in Ordas until early evening so we can explore the town or take an optional tour into the Hungarian countryside - the Puszta. Later we set sail for Budapest.

 

Day 7

There is some free time this morning to stroll through the lively shopping streets of Budapest before joining our excursion to the Danube Bend and Esztergom. We pass through pretty towns and countryside with great views of the Danube as it snakes it’s way through the valley. Whilst we are on our excursion the ship has sailed to Esztergom where we rejoin it later. Once on board we set sail for Bratislava.

 

Day 8

We dock this morning in Bratislava, the Slovakian capital,. We have a guided tour of the city, part walking, part coach before rejoining our vessel at lunchtime to sail to Vienna. A leisurely afternoons cruising, an opportunity to enjoy the passing scenery before arriving in Vienna during the evening. This evening we have an optional excursion either to a classical concert or a visit to Vienna Woods sampling the new wine at a traditional wine bar. Late this evening we cast off to sail into the Wachau region.

 

Day 9

Today we cruise to Melk. Here we have fine views of the Benedictine Monastery which stands in a prominent position overlooking the river. We stop here and enjoy a coach tour to the Wachau region of Austria. We re board the MS Classica for the highlight of our evening which is the Captain’s farewell dinner.

 

Day 10

We disembark this morning in Passau and join our coach. We travel through Germany passing Regensburg, Nurnberg and Karlsruhe. We cross the River Rhine close to Baden Baden, into France and continue to Metz. Here we spend our last night at the Mercure Hotel in the city centre.

 

Day 11

We leave Metz and make our way to Calais for our short sea crossing to Dover. Once again we rejoin our coach and make our homeward journey arriving during the evening.
