HEBRIDEAN ODYSSEY

Staying at the Isle of Barra Beach Hotel and The Cabarfeidh Hotel, Stornoway

Thursday 31st May - Wednesday 6th June 2012

7 Days

Day 1

We board our coach this morning and head northward for a wonderful Island hopping experience in the Outer Hebrides. Our journey takes us through the Midlands and the Lake District and on to the Erskine Bridge Hotel for our overnight stay.

Day 2

Today we continue North via Loch Lomond and Loch Awe to the coastal town of Oban. We board the early afternoon Caledonian MacBrayne ferry crossing to the Isle of Barra. We arrive in plenty of time for dinner at the Isle of Barra Beach Hotel where we spend the next two nights.

Day 3

The Isle of Barra is considered by many to be the most beautiful little island in Britain. Its tranquil beaches, distinctive culture and an ancient history make any visit to Barra a memorable one. Today is “at Leisure” to relax and enjoy this peaceful island.

Day 4

Todays island hopping will see you visit seven islands in one day. Start with an early morning crossing from Barra to Eriskay. Eriskay is famous for Eriskay ponies and is the real “Whiskey Galore”. It was just off this island that the SS Politician ran aground in 1941 with 50000 cases of Whiskey aboard. The locals managed to save several hundred cases before the ship sank providing them with good supply for some time. We next take the causeway to South Uist where the west coast is a continuous sandy beach and the east is dominated by mountainous peaks. Another causeway connects with Benbecula where we have included a coffee stop. The Benbecula causeway connects to North Uist. This island is more than half covered by water making it a bird watchers paradise. The next part of today’s excursion is to board the afternoon ferry for the one hour crossing to Harris. We travel up the West coast past numerous, un spoilt, white sandy beaches and some of the most breathtaking beautiful scenery in the Western Isles. The final leg of our journey is to Lewis and our hotel in Stornoway where we will stay for the next two nights.

Day 5

Lewis is both the most northerly and the largest island of the Outer Hebrides. Lewis has a history that goes back thousands of years. On the west coast at Callanish stands the amazing collection of stones called “Hebrides Stonehenge”. Our excursion takes us through the Moorland interior, where peat is still cut for fuel, past traditional croft dwellings and Carolway Broch, one of Scotland's best preserved defensive structures.

Day 6

This morning is “at leisure” in Stornaway before a three hour early afternoon crossing to Ullapool on the mainland. We then travel through the delightful mountain scenery of the Spey Valley and to our overnight stop at the Nethybridge Hotel .

Day 7

We join our coach today for our journey south towards home. We make several stops en route and arrive by early evening,
