IRELAND - DUBLIN, WICKLOW AND VALLEY OF THE KINGS

Staying at the Dunboyne Castle Hotel

6 Days

 

Day 1

Following a morning departure we travel to Hoyhead for our ferry crossing to Dublin. On reaching the port we rejoin our coach and travel the 12 miles to Dunboyne Castle . Set in landscaped gardens the Four Star Dunboyne Castle is the beautifully restored former home of The Lord of Dunboyne  and it is here where we spend the next five nights.

 

Day 2

This morning we have a 2 hour guided tour of Dublin seeing Christchurch, St Patrick’s Cathedral, Trinity College, Temple Bar, the iconic Ha’penny Bridge and fascinating Dublin Castle, This afternoon is free to enjoy the city and sample Irish life.

 

Day 3

Our excursion today is a full day to Powerscourt Estate and Wicklow Mountains. At Powerscourt we have time to explore the beautiful estate gardens. We then head towards the traditional Irish village of Laragh where we make a lunch stop. After lunch we travel to Glendalough , famous for its 6th century monastic settlement and the beginning of  the “Valley of the Two Lakes” then pass the Wicklow Gap and enjoy the stunning scenic views of Wicklow’s countryside and the two Blessington Lakes before returning to Dunboyne Castle.

 

Day 4

We board our coach this morning for a visit to County Kildare’s Tully Estate, the home of the Irish National Stud and some of Ireland’s finest  thoroughbreds. Here we can enjoy a tour of the National Stud and the Horse Museum before visiting Europe’s finest Japanese Garden and St Fiachra’s lakeside and woodland gardens. This afternoon we visit the Kildare Outlet Shopping Village, with over 50 designer discount shops and a great selection of cafes and restaurants.  We will have time to bag a bargain or simply enjoy the atmosphere.

 

Day 5

This morning we board our coach to visit the” Valley of the Kings”. We journey to Newgrange to visit a magnificent UNESCO World Heritage ancient royal burial site, dated 3200BC , older than the Egyptian pyramids. Experience the visitor centre and be taken by mini bus to enter the real tomb. Afterwards we head north and visit the site of the Battle of Boyne 1690, the largest ever Irish battle between 61000 troops. Here we can visit the 18th century Oldbridge house which houses the visitor centre. Finally we visit the churchyards of Monasterboice home to some of the best examples of Celtic high crosses in Ireland

 

Day 6

This morning we say good bye to Dunboyne and head to Dublin for our return ferry crossing to Holyhead. We then rejoin our coach and continue homeward making the usual refreshment and comfort stops en-route.
