ISLE OF WIGHT DELIGHTS

Staying at the Melbourne Ardenlea Hotel, Shanklin

Monday 29th August – Friday 2nd September 2011

5 Days

Day 1

Following a morning departure we make our way to Portsmouth for our short sea crossing to Fishbourne. On arrival in Fishbourne we rejoin our coach and travel to Shanklin for our four night stay at the Melbourne Ardenlea Hotel.

Day 2

Today we have a visit to Osbourne House, the country retreat of Queen Victoria. We can see the richly decorated and furnished private apartments, giving us a remarkable picture of the private life of the Royal Family in the 19th Century. We can visit the lovely grounds with its walled garden and a real Swiss Cottage. After our visit to Osborne House we make our way to the pretty village of Godshill where we make a stop before returning for some time at leisure in Shanklin.

Day 3

We will have a tour of the south of the Isle of Wight today, starting with a visit to the Ventnor Botanic Gardens. The gardens extend over 22 acres and were originally opened in 1972. The microclimate here allows a wide variety of plants to be grown that are too tender for elsewhere in the UK. After our visit to the gardens we stop at Ventnor with its sheltered bay and smart promenade before taking the South Coast past Blackgang Chine to Brightstone, with time to visit Isle of Wight Pearl then onto Alum Bay. Alum Bay is famous for its breathtaking views of the Needles, three chalk Monoliths stretching out into Solent and the bay itself with its richly coloured sands and cliffs. We return to Shanklin in plenty of time for dinner and this evening’s entertainment.

Day 4

After a leisurely breakfast this morning we board our coach and travel toward Ryde, where we have included a guided tour of Rosemary Vineyard. After our tour we visit Sandown probably the best loved resort on the Isle of Wight, with its golden beach and esplanade. We have the rest of the day here at leisure.

Day 5

We have time at leisure in Shanklin this morning before making our way to Fishbourne for our return ferry crossing to Portsmouth. From here we continue our journey homeward, arriving during the evening.
