THE PRIDE OF THE PEAK DISTRICT

Staying at the Barcelo Shrigley Hall Hotel Golf And Country Club, Macclesfield

Monday 10th - Friday 14th September 2012

5 Days

Day 1

Following a morning departure we travel through the Midlands and on into Derbyshire, we make a lunch stop in Ashbourne, one of the counties finest market towns. Later we continue to the Barcelo Shrigley Hall Hotel which is situated close to the town of Macclesfield. Set in 262 acres of spectacular countryside and a 18 hole championship golf course provide a stunning setting for this 19th Century country house, on the edge of the Peak District National Park.

Day 2 - 4

During our stay here we have included various excursions, they are a day to Chatsworth House and Bakewell. Chatsworth was first built in 1552 and lived in by the Dukes of Devonshire ever since, set in magnificent parkland, the house was used for filming part of Pride and Prejudice. After Chatsworth we travel the short distance to Bakewell, famous for its puddings. We also have a ride on the Peak Railway which runs steam and diesel hauled heritage passenger trains through the stunning Derbyshire countryside between Matlock and Rowsley. After a round trip on the railway we have some free time in Matlock, during the afternoon we continue to the spa town of Buxton, it increased in popularity during Georgian times when the 5th Duke of Devonshire developed the town into a spa resort and added much of its magnificent architecture. Another day we travel to Matlock Bath which stands on the River Derwent from here we can take the cable car to the heights of Abraham, from here there are fine views of Matlock and the surrounding countryside, also the modern visitor centre, cafeteria and the network of caves and other attractions make a fascinating visit.

Day 5

Today we leave our hotel for our return journey, en route we make a stop at the Wedgewood Visitor Centre, afterwards we continue towards home, arriving by late afternoon.
