WATERWAYS OF SCOTLAND

Staying at the Best Western Gleddoch House Hotel, Renfrewshire

Monday 23rd - Friday 27th April 2012

5 Days

Day 1

This morning we board our coach and head northward for our tour of some of the most scenic waterways of Scotland. Making several comfort stops en route we arrive at the Best Western Gleddoch House Hotel late afternoon. Gleddoch House was originally the home of shipping baron, Sir William Lithgow and is situated on the banks of the Clyde Eastury and has splendid views of the Renfrewshire Hills. We spend four nights at this comfortable hotel.

Day 2

Today we have a full day excursion to the Isle of Bute. We take the ferry from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay (Bute) and then take a scenic tour of the island. Included in this tour is a visit to Mount Stuart, an outstanding and flamboyant Victorian, Gothic style mansion with beautiful gardens within a 300 acre estate. We continue around the island with stops at the stunning bays of Scalpsie and Ettrick. We return to the mainland by early evening ferry in time for dinner.

Day 3

This morning we sail across the Clyde to Dunoon on the Cowal Pennisula. We visit Benmore Botanic Gardens set in the mountains of Loch Lomond and Trossachs national Park. Highlights of this lovely garden include the great Redwood Avenue, the formal garden and the Chilean Rainforest Glade. Later we travel via Loch Eck and Loch Fyne to the shores of Loch Lomond, with some time at leisure for a Loch cruise or souvenir shopping.

Day 4

Our excursion today is to Falkirk for a fascinating ride on the Falkirk Wheel. The Falkirk Wheel was built to commemorate the millennium and as a link between the Forth and the Clyde Canal and the Union Canal which lies 35 metres above. After our boat ride we continue to South Queensferry and board the Forth Belle for a sightseeing cruise on the Firth of Forth. We have a guided commentary on this cruise and enjoy views of Inchcolm Island with it’s historic abbey and both of the Forth bridges.

Day 5

We leave Gleddoch House this morning for our return journey. We break our journey with several stops and arrive home by early evening.
