SNOWDONIA AND MOUNTAIN RAILWAYS

Staying at the Celtic Royal Hotel, Caernarfon

Monday 23rd - Friday 27th July 2012

5 Days

Days 1

This morning we board our coach and make our way to Caernafon for our four night stay at the Celtic Royal Hotel. We make a lunch stop at Llangollen and then continue our journey through the lovely North Wales countryside to our destination. We enjoy a welcome drink on arrival a pleasant way to start our stay in Snowdonia.

Days 2 - 4

Nowhere in Britain can claim to offer such a diverse range of spectacular scenery, attractions and cultural heritage as the Snowdonia National Park. In this region there are wild rocky mountains, hidden valleys and cascading rivers and we have included various excursions to ensure that we can experience, fully, this beautiful area. We have a journey on the Welsh Highland Railway, Britain’s longest narrow gauge railway, from Caernarfon to Porthmadog. We then join the Ffestiniog Railway from Porthmadog to the slate quarrying town of Bleanaeu Ffestiniog. This train rises over 700 feet from sea level to mountains passing tranquil meadows and waterfalls on its journey. A visit to this area would not be complete without a visit, by train to the Llechwedd working slate mines and caverns. We also offer a trip across the Menai Straits to Anglesey an area of outstanding natural beauty and a visit to Llanfair P.G., the village with the longest name in Britain. Also included is the memorable, return summit journey on the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Opened in 1896 the railway is a tremendous feat of engineering. This rack and pinion railway rises to within 66ft of the summit of this the highest mountain in England and Wales, time will be included for a visit to the Snowdon visitor centre. There will also be some free time to explore Caernarfon and maybe visit the most famous of Wales castles, the setting for the investiture of the Prince of Wales.

Day 5

We leave the Celtic Royal Hotel this morning and make our way, once again through the Snowdonia National Park and homeward making refreshment stops en route we arrive late afternoon.
