THE HILLS OF TUSCANY

Staying at the Hotel Ercolini and Savi. Montecatini

10 Days

 

Day 1

Following an early morning start we travel to Dover where we board our ferry for our short sea crossing to Calais. On arrival we rejoin our coach and travel through Northern France into Belgium and on through Luxembourg  towards Metz, here we spend the night at the Hotel Restaurant Metz Technopole.

 

Day 2

Today we continue through France passing Nancy and on through the Alsace region crossing the Vosges mountains towards Mulhouse and on to the Swiss border at Basel.  From here we continue via Lucern . We have some nice views of Lake Lucern as we travel towards the St Gotthard tunnel and on towards the Italian border. For the last part of our journey we travel around Lake Maggiore to the stylish resort of Stresa where we have our overnight stay at the Hotel Milan Speranza which overlooks the lake.

 

Day 3

This morning we leave Stresa and join the motorway network and head south to join the spectacular coast road from Genova to Viareggio. From here we travel inland to Montecatini where we spend five nights at the Hotel Ercolini and Savi. The hotel is a traditional four star hotel in the centre of this very pleasant Spa town and is located near the main square This evening we have a welcome drink and a Tuscan candlelit dinner

 

Day 4

A day at leisure in Montecatini with its shops, cafes, gardens and thermal springs which are said to have healing properties. Montecatini Alto the wonderful Tuscan hilltop town is nearby and is well worth a visit to see its ancient castles, churches and towers. The town is accessible by cable car or on foot for the energetic.

 

Day 5

Today  we travel to the lovely medieval town of  Siena which boasts a magnificent square as well as a Gothic cathedral. After spending some time in Siena we continue to the hilltop town of San Gimignano with its fifteen, 11th century towers dominating the Elsa Valley. The town takes its name from the Holy Bishop of Modena , St Gimignano who is said to have saved the village from the barbarian hordes. Some of Italy’s finest wines and high quality saffron is produced in this region.

 

Day 6

Today we have a full day to Lucca and  Pisa. Lucca is the birthplace of Puccini and has well preserved 16th century walls and narrow medieval streets. Pisa is famous for its leaning tower and spectacular cathedral. We have plenty of  time to enjoy both of these wonderful destinations before returning to our hotel in the afternoon.

 

Day 7

Today we will have, possibly, one of the main highlights of our holiday with a full day visit to Florence one of Italy’s most historic cities. We will travel, with our tour manager, by scheduled train service into the city. Here we will see the magnificent Duomo, the Ponte Vecchio or visit one of the famous galleries, there is so much to see and do here. We return to Montecatini during the late afternoon.

 

Day 8

After breakfast we leave Montecatini and travel northward through the Tuscan countryside and on passing Milan as we head towards the Swiss border.  From here we once again travel through the St Gotthard tunnel and on to Lucern where we spend the night at the four star Ameron Hotel Flora. The hotel is a short distance from the famous Kapell Bridge.

 

Day 9

This morning we leave Lucern and continue our journey through Switzerland into France. We cross the Vosges mountains and travel via Nancy and onto Reims where we spend our last night at the Quality Enzo Hotel.

 

Day 10

After breakfast we board our coach and make our way to Calais for our return ferry crossing to Dover. On arrival we rejoin our coach and continue towards home arriving by early evening.
